Week 3

Last week you identified some of the characteristics of effective teams and team members. This week we continue to build our framework for teams by looking at team performance and some of the elements that go into the performance of team members. The first two readings focus in detail on the stages of team development, where you will read about the dynamics that occur when team members are first coming together. The articles continue through the stages of team development to when teams actually disband. Many times, teams come together in organizations for a specific purpose. Once they complete the team accomplishes its goal, the team members go back to their original duties and the team dissolves. Think in terms of project teams, product development, and quality improvement teams.

Another key concept for the week is an interesting perspective on team productivity, provided in a seminal article by Ivan Steiner regarding his perspective on team productivity and performance. In it he discusses the different tasks that groups typically perform and group productivity. His model provides a view into the interaction between individuals on a team and the groups’ processes. It is summarized by the equation: actual productivity = potential productivity − faulty group processes. The implication is that because of poor group processes or ineffective team members, teams sometimes are not as effective as they can be.

Another dynamic that occurs on teams is called social loafing. You will learn about social loafing and how individuals who do not “pull their weight” impact other team members and the overall performance of your team. You will also discover ways to reduce the likelihood of social loafing on your teams. Finally, since we are looking at team productivity, we will also look at how to reward team performance in today’s organizations.

In summary, the readings this week will provide you with definitions and a good understanding of the concepts of team productivity, team performance, the stages or life cycle of teams, social loafing, and how to reward team members in order to motivate high performance on teams. Coupled with your own experiences, you will be able to respond to the questions posed and expand your knowledge regarding teams.
