Working With Employees: An I/O Commentary on Real World Problems

This required Portfolio assignment will give you experience observing and interacting with people outside of the classroom. It has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, synthesize knowledge, and integrate learning in a real world setting. This assignment accomplishes that goal by challenging you to:

  • Identify common challenges and issues that arise in the workplace
  • Evaluate strategies for addressing these challenges
  • Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, textbook, and additional scholarly sources.

Objective: This assignment is designed to help you identify common problems that managers face when dealing with employees, and the solutions that managers use in an attempt to solve those problems. This assignment will also give you an opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of the solutions from a practical perspective and from the perspective of research in Industrial/Organizational psychology.

Step 1: Identify and create someone who is a manager. This should be someone who is responsible for recruiting and/or selecting employees, supervising employees, and evaluating employee performance.

Step 2: Pretent and conduct a 30-minute interview with the manager. In your interview, be sure to cover the following questions:

  • What are some of the common problems that you have experienced with employees? Be sure to steer the discussion toward relevant topics such as recruitment, employee selection, employee motivation, employee training, job attitudes, giving feedback, creating incentives, managing conflict, and so forth.
  • Identify two major problems that the manager mentions and ask how he or she has responded to those problems. What solutions has the manager tried? Have the solutions worked?

Step 3: Using scholarly sources such as your textbook and professional journal articles that you find in the University Library, research the two problems mentioned by the manager. What does the field of I/O say about these types of problems or issues? What recommendations might you make to the manager?

Document your interview and your library research in a 1,050- to 1,150-word paper. Your paper should consist of the following parts:

  • An introduction, describing the individual that you interviewed and his/her position
  • A summary of the interview focusing on the two major problems and attempted solutions
  • A scholarly commentary with recommendations from the perspective of I/O psychology

Be sure to include at least five scholarly references in your paper. Provide a list your specific interview questions as an Appendix. Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Mohamed Bouazizi a 26 year old from Tunisia burned in himself in December 17, 2010 frustrated with Tunisia’s job market.  His action caused bloody protestant who were equally frustrated about Tunisia’s economy.  It drove the president to leave the country.  His action also has weight into what happened in Egypt in 2011.  The Egyptian were tired of weak economy and were frustrated to see dictatorship which gained all benefits of the country to their family and people around them.  This has caused the government to shut down the Internet and the phone.  This caused other nations to lead bloody protests in Jordan, Yemen, Algeria, and other Arab nation.   Citizens in Arab nations were also frustrated about the western countries supporting the dictators also.

Muslim Brotherhood plays a huge roll on elected officials, because they are a very powerful Muslim group which was found in Egypt.  Elected officials work with them fearing to lose power if they don’t cooperate.

Intel Assessment

You are an intelligence analyst for the Department of Homeland Security assigned to the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (DHS-OIA). You are currently working in the Special Events Unit and are responsible for producing an intelligence assessment outlining potential threats to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting that is to take place in New York City 2 months from now. To that end, your unit has created ad hoc intelligence requirements, implemented an intelligence collection plan, and collected and disseminated raw intelligence pertaining to this event. Your supervisor has now asked you to draft the final analytical product in the form of an intelligence threat assessment.

Assignment Guidelines

  • For this assignment, you must prepare an intelligence threat assessment on the upcoming UNGA meeting in New York City. At a minimum, your assessment of 800–1,100 words should address the following (as paragraphs):
    • Title
      • Your assessment should have a descriptive, detailed title to let the reader know exactly what the report is about.
    • Scope
      • This paragraph should explain why you are writing this assessment and the date and time frame that this assessment will cover. You should also identify which intelligence requirements this assessment will be addressing, as well as any limitations in your assessment.
    • Executive Summary
      • This paragraph should convey the most important points of your paper up front. Many executives only have time to read this paragraph.
    • Event Overview
      • This paragraph should discuss the details of the event and address any background information that is important for the reader to understand to put things into context.
    • Current Threat Information
      • This paragraph should address your current intelligence with regards to threats.
    • Intelligence Gaps
      • This paragraph should discuss things you still do not know. These are essentially unanswered questions. You want to tell the readers what you know and what you do not know.
    • Analysis
      • This paragraph is the most important and should include your perspective, outlook, implications, and recommendations. Remember that the whole purpose of intelligence analysis is not to describe the event but to explain the significance of the reported information.
  • There is no specific format for this assignment.
  • This assignment will require additional outside research.
    • You may use any resources available to you when drafting this product.
    • You must have a minimum of 2 additional scholarly sources.
    • You may also use your previous week’s work to support this assignment (e.g., using your raw intelligence reporting from week 4).
  • Compile your responses in the final intelligence threat assessment, and submit the file to your instructor.
  • All sources must be referenced using APA style.

Please submit your assignment.
